London, May 17th: Adele won two prizes at the 57th annual Ivor Novello Awards, being named as Songwriter of the Year, while her hit "Rolling in the Deep" was the Most Performed Work of 2011. However, the same song was beaten by Ed Sheeran's "The A-Team" which was named Best Song Musically and Lyrically, while PJ Harvey's "Let England Shake" won the Album award, beating Adele's "21" and Kate Bush's "50 Words For Snow."
US artist Lana Del Rey and her British co-writer Justin Parker won Best Contemporary Song for "Video Games", while Take That were honoured for their Outstanding Contribution to British music, collected by Gary Barlow, Howard Donald and Mark Owen. Best Television Soundtrack went to Martin Phipps for BBC Two drama The Shadow Line, while the Film Soundtrack award went to Alex Heffes for the score for The First Grader.
Other awards at the ceremony at London's Grosvenor House Hotel went to Spandau Ballet's Gary Kemp (Outstanding Song Collection); Siouxsie Sioux (Ivors Inspiration), Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits (Lifetime Achievement), presented by Sir George Martin; and veteran pianist Stan Tracey (Ivors' first Jazz Award). Legendary US songwriter Jimmy Webb was honoured with the PRS Special International Award, while the final award of the day, preceded by a hilarious speech by Leslie Bricusse, went to Andrew Lloyd Webber in the form of a BASCA Fellowship. The musical peer now joins a select group including his former writing partner Tim Rice, along with Elton John and Paul McCartney among others. The awards were hosted by Paul Gambaccini for the 25th consecutive year, while speeches were also made by BASCA chair Sarah Rodgers, PRS for Music chairman Guy Fletcher and CEO Robert Ashcroft.
