London, 21st July 2013: Cherry Red, one of the UK's most iconic, eclectic and hardworking independent record labels celebrates its 35th birthday this month, and is as busy as ever. 2013 sees Cherry Red's famously busy release schedule (623 albums - all on CD - in 2012) continue apace, including new studio albums from Big Country, The Fall (both making the Top 75), House of Love and the Blow Monkeys; also a comprehensive reissue of Hawkwind's 'lost' Warrior On The Edge Of Time. Exciting new signings include Jack Bruce, Luke Haines, The Polyphonic Spree and Uriah Heep's Ken Hensley, all of whom will deliver fresh studio albums in due course.
In May this year, the label announced a partnership with Alan McGee to create a new imprint, 359 Music. Cherry Red will run the day to day operations, with McGee handling the overall vision and A&R. The new label has now received over 2,000 submissions all of which Alan McGee is listening to personally. The first releases should be out this September. Also out via Cherry Red on the 24th June is Nitin Sawhney's remarkable "OneZero", a career respective recorded live without autotune or overdubs, direct to vinyl at Metropolis Studios. The deluxe boxset features a collaboration with Joss Stone and four new tracks from his upcoming studio album, due next year. Continuing its commitment to quality music, Cherry Red will also release "Scared to Get Happy - A Story of Indie Pop" 1980-89 on 24th June, a luxurious five-disc box set fit to burst with classic 1980s independent pop music, including tracks from Primal Scream, The Wedding Present and Inspiral Carpets.
To celebrate its birthday, the label hosted a 35th anniversary party at Camden Dingwalls on 6th June, which included a strong and heartfelt solo performance from Dr Robert of The Blow Monkeys and a dark-humoured pop set by Go Kart Mozart, the current musical vehicle of long-time Cherry Red artist Lawrence.
Said Adam Velasco, MD of Cherry Red: “Despite all the doom and gloom of the digital era, it is no surprise that a label with such a pure commitment to music as Cherry Red should endure for 35 years and beyond. I'm proud to be part of its continuing legacy of signing great artists, releasing both incredible new albums and treasured catalogue for fans of real music.” Cherry Red founder and Chairman Iain McNay added: “We may be 35 years old but sometimes I feel the adventure is still just beginning for us. There is just so much diverse and exciting music out there to release, both catalogue and new recordings. We see nothing but opportunity.”
Cherry Red was founded by Iain McNay in 1978. Renowned for its diversity, the label had early successes with artists ranging from the Dead Kennedys to Everything But The Girl, The Monochrome Set and Felt – going on to release the groundbreaking compilation Pillows & Prayers in 1982. As well as a continued commitment to new music, Cherry Red now acts as an umbrella for more than 20 individual imprints and catalogue specialists, including RPM, Reactive, Esoteric, BBR, él and Grapefruit – releasing more than 500 albums each year.
